Certified qualification in psychometric test use

I am pleased to have gained a certified qualification in psychometric test use in an occupational context. This qualification is conferred by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and indicates that the holder is trained to a nationally recognised, certified standard, and has agreed to abide by the BPS Code of Good Practice for Psychological Testing.

Certification as a test user means inclusion in the Membership of the BPS Register of Qualifications in Test Use (RQTU). The RQTU upholds standards in educational, forensic and occupational testing. The BPS Register lists those who have obtained one or more qualifications and are affirmed as meeting the Society’s standards of competence in test use. The RQTU records information about its members’ qualifications and can be accessed by the public to verify claims made by people regarding their qualifications.

Psychological tests are used in all walks of life to assess ability, personality and behaviour. There are two types of psychological test - tests of ability, aptitude or attainment, which are known as measures of maximum performance, and tests designed to assess personal qualities, such as personality, beliefs, social competence, values, developmental milestones and interests and to measure motivation or drive. These are known as measures of typical performance.

Psychological testing is often used in an occupational context to assist individuals with, for example, personal development and to make more informed career choices. Psychological testing is also used by many employers, for example, to assist with their selection process or help focus learning and development and other talent management initiatives.

The RQTU allows employers or others wanting to engage a qualified test user to check an individual’s qualifications in testing. The BPS encourages the use of competent test users only. To find out more, you may access the Register here.
